Obituary

Written by H. Rodrigo Ortiz.

Today we will say goodbye to Mr. Jorge Humberto Jiménez Mazariegos and we want you to know a little bit about our dear Don Jorge’s life.

He was born in Guatemala on April 13, 1959. Just before his eighteenth birthday, he signed up for the police academy and served as a police officer for 15 years, until he was shot in the line of duty. Afterwards he was a firefighter for 2 years and worked in a security agency as a specialist in police training.

As a result of his job as a police officer and instructor in the security agency he saw the need to come to the United States and solicit political exile.

Once in the USA he spent time in Arizona, Boston and finally established himself in Pennsylvania, where he lived 22 years with his dear wife Irma and his three children Jorge, Kelinton and Kyra.

Here in the USA he worked in diverse jobs, such as hotel maintenance, kitchen prep for restaurants, foodpacker for the department of sanitation, distribution warehouse and middle school custodian.
He took classes in the care of senior citizens, worked as a volunteer firefighter for Franklin Fire Department, helped with transportation and served as a personal reference for people to get jobs at local farms and factories. He also helped Ms. Sue Marshall with the ESL program at King St. Church. Ms. Marshall notes:

“Jorge was involved for many years in the Agape English classes from King Street Church. It was our joy to help him study for his American citizenship test, and we rejoiced and celebrated with him when this dream became a reality. Our fondest memory of Jorge is the big heart that he had for others in his community. He put Philippians 2:4 into action. This verse says, ‘Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others.’ If he saw a brother or sister in need, he acted on it. This is how he lived his life. He was our student, our friend, and a dearly loved brother in Christ.”
In June of 2018 Don Jorge took his oath as a citizen of the United States of America, and he carried both nations in his heart with pride—Guatemala as his nation of birth, and the USA for the opportunities it had provided him.

When Don Jorge came to the USA he brought his beloved wife with him, who now mourns the loss of her life partner of 32 years. She expressed the following:

“I feel blessed for the life that my beloved husband gave me, and for the three blessings that are my children and who have followed his footsteps, his teachings and advice in order to become good people and examples for many people in the Hispanic community of Chambersburg. We had the opportunity to travel a lot and to see a large part of the USA. We were able to buy a house that represents not only our home but also a sanctuary where our children and grandchildren could grow.”

Let’s get to know a little bit about Don Jorge’s children.

Jorge Jr., married to Marilú Jiménez
A 2007 graduate of Vo-Tech in automotive painting, he studied two years at Penn State Mont Alto and three years in ITT Tech, graduating with a degree in Computer Network Systems. In 2017 he graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy and currently works as the Sheriff of Franklin County.

Kelinton Jiménez
A 2007 graduate of Vo-Tech in automotive repairs, certified in ASE Retail Sales. He has been working since 2008 in autopart sales, and is currently an Assistant Manager at NAPA Auto Parts. Throughout his time working in sales, he helped his fiancé to continue her studies. Citty Rivera is Kelinton’s fiancé, and since 2006 has been another daughter to Don Jorge.

Kyra Jiménez
A 2012 graduate of Vo-Tech in Nursing, currently studying to be a medical assistant. She has worked as an interpreter and coordinator for the Agricultural Workers Program at Keystone Health.

Don Jorge loved very much his grandchildren Aurora, Ariel, Sofía, Edgar, Jamuel, Alex, and Soley. Don Jorge’s legacy lies in his children’s professional development and their service to the community. Each one, in their work, have given and continue to give a good name to the Hispanics of Chambersburg. We feel very proud of the great father, grandfather, friend, neighbor, man of God and above all the great human being that he was during his life. Cancer has taken him away from his loved ones for now, but we know that he is in paradise and taking care of his beloved family from heaven.

Many thanks to Don Jorge for obtaining the American dream and as an exemplary citizen showing us that it is possible to achieve it.
