Dr. Harold L. Castleman, 89, resident of Penn Hall Nursing Center passed into life eternal May 1, 2014. “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Born on September 26, 1924 in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late Turner L. and Lola Weber Castleman. He was preceded in life by his beloved wife of 46 years, Patricia T. Castleman and his son J.Mark Castleman. He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth C. Baer (wife of Tracy L. Baer) and two grandsons, Gavin P. Baer and J. Turner Baer. Harold was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the 96th Infantry Division in the Philippine Campaign where he received a Purple Heart. He was a 1942 graduate of Martinsburg High School. He attended Shepherd College, Illinois College of Technology, and received a doctorate from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1950. He was a self-employed Optometrist who practiced for 46 years in Chambersburg. He was a member of the American Optometric Society and past-president of the Central Pennsylvania Optometric Society. Harold belonged to the Presbyterian Church of the Falling Spring for over 60 years during which he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School Superintendent. He served as a director on the Chambersburg Community Chest and was the U.S.O. representative to the Chest and the United Way for 40 years. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, former member and past-president of the Exchange Club, Life member of the V.F.W., and the George Washington Lodge #143. He wrote a column on duplicate bridge for the Public Opinion for more than 30 years and was a founding member of the Chambersburg Bridge Club. He was a member of the America Contract Bridge League where is attained the rank of Platinum Life Master. Harold will be remembered for his devotion to Christ and his family, his dedication to community service, and his genuine interest in and compassion for those he met in his journey through life. His funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10th at 2:00pm at the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring followed by a gathering of friends in the Family Life Center.
