Jack William Strobel

Lt. Col (Retired) Jack William Strobel died peacefully on May 10, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Jean, of 56 years; daughter Kimberly Payne of Greer, South Carolina and Susan Hull of Ellicott City, Maryland, -7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Jack was born in Batavia, NY, the son of Harry Christian and Getrude Walton Strobel. He grew up in LeRoy, NY and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1953 and Hobart College in 1957. There he was active in lacrosse, basketball and the Theta Delta Chi fraternity and honored as a Druid. He entered the Air force and became a jet pilot instructor in the U.S. and later on exchange with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. After training at the Defense Intelligence School he became Assistant Air Attaché in Laos (1968-1971). He was then assigned to the U. S. Embassy in Paris, France (1971-1975). His last job with the Air Force was at the Pentagon, where he retired in 1979. He went on to get his MBA at George Washington University and was an active volunteer at the Smithsonian Institution. During this time he continued his love of flying by teaching small plane flying at the Andrews Air Force Base Aero Club. A memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017 a 1:30 PM at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, PA Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
