Ruth Annetta (Martin) Strayer departed this life on Sunday, September 3, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, George R. and Ruth (Lauver) Martin of Gettysburg; five sisters; two brothers; and her daughter, Janet M. Strayer Foose. Surviving her two daughters, Annetta Long (Richard), Phyllis Eckert (William); son, Alan W. Strayer; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Strayer was a 1941 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1945 graduate of West Chester State Teachers College with a Bachelors of Arts degree in music. Music was an integral part of her life, beginning with playing the piano in Sunday school at the age of 12 at St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg. She taught music at the elementary school level in the Chambersburg Area School District for 23 years before retiring. Her love for music continued throughout her life. She played in all girl dance band that performed in the evenings at Hamid's Pier in Atlantic City, NJ. She was an organist and choir director at area churches, musical accompanist and Director for Community Theater and in summer musicals at the Totem Tole Playhouse. Mrs. Strayer was also a world traveler including Canada, Europe, USSR and the Far East. The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10 AM at Sellers Funeral Home. Friends are invited to visit the family beginning at 9 AM. Interment will be at 3 PM in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg.
