Mildred L. Brown (Greenawalt)

Mildred L. Greenawalt Brown passed away peacefully in her home in Chambersburg on Sunday, June 24th, at the age of 96. Her late husband, John W. Brown, was her loving partner until he passed in 2006. Our beloved Millie was born on June 6, 1922 in Harrisburg, the daughter of Josephine M. (Zug) and Howard D. Greenawalt, predeceased. She was also predeceased by her sister, Jane (and Richard) Arnold, and survived by their family. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Aungst Storms of New Cumberland and her family, and her brother, William E. (and Roberta) Greenawalt of York and their family, as well as her son, Ronald E. (and Tauna) Brown, of Chambersburg and their family, Millie’s 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and her daughter, Barbara Brown Stephenson of Boynton Beach, Florida. When Millie was young, she loved to play softball and climb trees and, over the years, truly enjoyed meaningful friendships. In school, her interests spanned English, spelling, and math, as well as her enjoyable time in two sororities. She graduated from John Harris High School College Prep in 1940 and, after completing her curriculum at Central Pennsylvania Business College, helped support our country as a teletype operator while John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. They wrote letters to each other every day during their 2-½ year separation. Upon John’s return, Millie joined him in energetically supporting the work in the family businesses and in the VFW. She was also an amazing cook, and along with her husband, raised her children to have integrity and to be kind to others. She taught Sunday School at Central Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed the Garden Club while also volunteering many hours over many years at the Chambersburg Hospital, the PTA, Meals on Wheels, the YMCA, and many events at Central Presbyterian. Millie was a caring woman with a great deal of heart, integrity, compassion, and refinement, and she had an intelligent sense of humor. She profoundly loved her family. And in her most recent years, she was delighted with the extremely kind, caring, and knowledgeable caregivers who worked very hard, along with the compassionate medical professionals, to help her feel content and comfortable in her life. We, her family, offer our most sincere appreciation to all who have contributed to her quality care. We also thank her for all the love she has given to us in so many ways, and for being such a fine example of a good and loving human being. She will be deeply missed. A Funeral Service is scheduled for 2 PM on Tuesday, July 3rd, preceded by a visitation from 1:00-1:45 PM, at Central Presbyterian Church. It will be officiated by Reverend William Beck. Donations in Millie’s name can be made to any of the organizations listed above, as well as the Salvation Army and the Alzheimer’s Association.
